The semi-ghost town of Ballerat is a great jumping off point for numerous 4WD trips into the Panamint Mountains.

The entire town is privately owned, but Louie who currently runs the store (snacks, cold soft drinks, books & maps etc.) will let you explore if you ask permission first.

Ballerat Don, who used to run the store, left for Arizona, but has now returned and is working up at the Panamint Springs Resort. We talked briefly with him, Don, in late March '99.
